EVERYDAY CONTEM

Chiang Mai, renowned for its craftsmanship and internationally recognized handicrafts, faces challenges as new generations shift consumer preferences. Traditional crafts are fading as fewer young people continue the legacy, struggling to adapt to modern competition.

The Everyday Contem Exhibition aims to align regional handicrafts with contemporary lifestyles, drawing insights from countries like Japan that have integrated traditional crafts with the creative industry. The exhibition encourages self-reflection to enhance the value of Chiang Mai's traditional skills.

The exhibition explores the sustainability of Japanese folk crafts through several case studies. The first case examines Mingei (民芸), a 1920s movement that highlighted the beauty of everyday functional objects and played a crucial role in reviving Japanese crafts and culture. The second case traces the development of Mingu (民具), traditional utensils that eventually led to the creation of the global brand MUJI (無地). Additionally, the exhibition showcases collaborative works between young creators and master craftsmen from Chiang Mai and northern Thailand, emphasizing efforts to revitalize traditional crafts with contemporary appeal.

Building on an appreciation of the past and awareness of the present, the exhibition explores future possibilities for sustainable handicrafts in Chiang Mai. This involves creating valuable products and competing in international markets.
